“Come on kid one more time. You’ve got this, I’m right here,” Gary said. I paused and then attempted for what seemed like the 200th time, a round off back flip. “That was it! You don’t even need me here,” he said. I smiled a little but I wasn’t convinced. I was 12 years old and it was the night before my first home tumbling performance of the year with the Flying 6. Angel, Emily, Bailey, Alicia, Kelcie, and I were squeezing in one last practice and all I wanted to do was master my back flip. But practice was coming to an end and it was time to leave. My parents were in Europe so I drove home with my grandma and spent the next 22 hours going over the motions in my head.
Tuesday night was the big game, Glenwood vs. Harlan. Our tumbling team had been warming up and it was my turn for a back flip. My nerves were completely wired and Gary was talking to another parent so instead of waiting for his spot I decided to just go. I took a deep breath and sprinted down the hall. I placed both hands on the red vinyl mat, kicked over onto my feet and then jumped with all my might into a perfect tuck then came back down and stuck it…. Then I simply walked off the mat towards the line again. Everyone was staring at me and it seriously took me a full 45 seconds to realize what had just happened. And when I finally did it was like fireworks were going off. All the parents were clapping, Gary had swallowed me in a huge bear hug and the girls were jumping up and down and giving me high fives. At that moment it didn’t matter that my parents weren’t there to see me accomplish my goal because I had my own little support system right there in the main hall of Glenwood High School.
From that day forward everyone I tumbled with in the Flying 6, Acrobatic Fanatics, and Fantastic Flyers became like family and their families my extended family. Gary always said there were two sides to him, the coach side and the dad side. In all actuality both “sides” are meshed into one and are present constantly. He always encourages me to do my best and pushes me to become a better at everything I do, not just tumbling, and we joke around, he laughs with me (and sometimes at me) and he cares about me and the other girls no matter what.
Then there is Cheryl AHHH Cheryl. Basically I love Cheryl and I say that with the utmost care, admiration, and respect. She listens to me and I mean really listens, she’s is great to gossip with, gives great advice and she loves her music! Do I hear a nominee for a second mom? And how about a third and a forth one… Mel Craft and Mary Finn have also been amazing stand in moms.
They were always there to give me rides, cheer me on, buy me a Gatorade and even let me crash at their house after a long day of performances. Tumbling just would not have been the same with out them.
You know I didn’t forget my girls… all of them are sisters to me, more than sisters some of them were and still are my best friends. Over the last 9years of tumbling I’ve had so many awesome memories it’s getting hard to keep track of them all. The best probably include: the first time I witnessed Montana Crow’s AMAZING dance moves, when Brittney Hopp and Kassie Finn had their MAJOR blonde moments, or the time I almost spit out the rainbow because I was making a face at Kelcie Craft after eating a handful of skittles. I especially love that it was not uncommon for our 2 hour practices to turn into 2 hours of giggling over the most random things. Being in a group with such different age levels is great too. I couldn’t help but smiling every time I see the “babies” of the group, Montana, Jessie, Jordan, Sid, and Mallory. One thing I will always do is be around for these girls because I know that they look up to me and the other older girls of the group. They laugh I definitely laugh, they cry I cry, but what they don’t know is that they look up to me but I look up to them as well. Tumbling takes incredible determination and dedication and I admire every single one of these girls for giving it everything they’ve got.
All sports come with the risk of injury. It just happens like that. Some people make the mistake of thinking that just because tumbling isn’t a contact sport means that it should be a piece of cake. This is so not the case. I am speaking from experience, I have obtained 3 tumbling injuries two of which occurred within 8 months of each other, doing the same thing (of all things it was a shoot through) But do you think for one second I considered never trying it again, or giving up tumbling completely? NO WAY! Even after two broken toes and a severely sprained ankle I refuse to let pain or injury slow me down.
Time that I spend on the Injured Reserve list is filled with rebuilding strength so I can get back out there, learning new moves by being at every practice, and cheering on my team for every roll, stunt and flip they do.
Above all I love that tumbling acts as an escape, an escape from the drama at school or the work at home. When my team and I step out on those hallow gym floors and hear the crowd cheering nothing else in the world matters. My adrenaline shoots sky high. I tremble slightly. But that’s only from the excitement and anticipation for that heart pumping music to start. And when that “PLAY” button is hit my entire body explodes with power. Soon it is like the beat of my heart, the song, and the pounding of my feet on the mat are all in sync. My muscle tense with every movement I make, every breath taken is like intake of energy.
In tumbling it does not matter if I miss a series or fumble with a stunt because it only takes .2 seconds for me to get right back in there with my team. To some 5 minutes of nonstop power tumbling may seem like a lot, but when that final stunt is put up and the music dies down and the crowd goes wild the time on the mats seem to have whizzed by in the blink of an eye.
Life is an emotional rollercoaster but tumbling keeps me in balance. I love tumbling and it is one of the most important things I do. It is everything I need all rolled into a single activity: Family, Friends, Food, Exercise, Laughs, and Stress reliever, the list goes on and on. No matter what life throws at me I know I will make it through because I have the wonderful love and support of my mom and dad, my brother and sister, and the incredible family I have stumbled upon at Gary’s Tumbling.

2006-12-20 Garys December Report
Gary’s Report
December 20, 2006

Well we into our first 2 months of “Exhibitions” and it have been a great start of the year!!!
Let’s start with our newest and quite excited group we called the “A and A” Tumblers…this group has been coached by Alana and Angel with some advising from me. This group of Tumblers is the youngest power tumblers I have seen come along in a long time, they will be a group to be watching out for as they continue to improve not only their tumbling skills but their attitude, drive, and ambition to perform. They have been performing at the Middle School and are schedule to make an appearance at a JV game in January. Keep up the great work!!!

Lets cover the Acrobatic Fanatics, their season will begin to pick-up in January, they been working real hard on the routine and their series…we have been struggling with some stunting and tumbling runs but that will smooth out in time. We finally got the right Tumbling Outfits in and they look great. January brings a busy month for the Fanatics…

The Fantastic Flyers have been full speed this month with one stretch of 9 performances in 7 days...(didn’t hear any complaints) they are looking awesome, with the exception of Glenwood the crowds have really enjoyed the routine…Cher and I have received numbers of compliments from so many folks either at their school or wherever we stop for dinner that night at their town regarding how they were impressed with the tumblers…Something I have not heard from GLENWOOD in a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooog time!!!!
Its great to have Stretch to almost full speed…Bones has been going all out being her final year (pain and all)…She has set the standards of being in the Fantastic Flyers to another notch as well as Stretch, and all the former Flyers that I have been coaching these past years. Their love of Tumbling seems to some how block-out the pain and shorten the healing time, for I know it HURTS to watch your Team perform and not be out there with them, this has and always will impress me more than they will ever know.

Merry Christmas to all
Cya soon

Gary’s Journal
November 3, 2006

Well we started our 2006-2007 Exhibition Season on Friday night at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, IA. Unlike last years real mess on opening night, this night went great.

First I’ll start with the great performance of all the Tumblers. It was a special night as Kelcie, Sidney, and Jessie made their debut appearance as a Fantastic Flyer!!! This was a great time for them to get rid of any opening night jitters (is that a word?)We had more room to warm-up than we knew what to do with…that was great!!!

Then came performance time and as usual our own special Tumbler “Angel” proceeded to make herself sick with nerves…but as usual she overcame that mess and performed just fine. How exciting to see Montana and Jordyn flying down the mat with their back series, and throwing aerials…they were just awesome!!!

Then came the big guns as it was so great to see Bone’s at full strength flying through the air effortlessly…then you had Stretch who ohh and ahhh the crowd with her version of the modified “GK” (Nina would love to see this)…and she really impressed me by staying on the “Mats” ALL NIGHT…way to go Stretch!!!!

I think Kelcie must be going for a record of the highest back walk-out (Bone’s hold the record and has the scars to back it up) keep it up Buff and you’ll get grounded as well!!!!
This years Team is another strong group as we have 4 Bases and 4 Flyers who are all experienced and are extremely eager to put up any stunt or try any Tumbling Series…
What a great year to look forward to as we get to see Bone’s in her final year as a Fantastic Flyer…and to watch Katie, Angel, and Kelcie become even more stronger Bases and put up more difficult stunts and throw so many different amazing back series.
And of course the Season would not be complete without the Flyers. With Montana and JK leading the group with their experience as flyers, Sidney who has been in the flyers as fill in before... Is a Base’s dream come true as she is thrown and toss effortlessly… (And with no FEAR). Then come Little Jessie D, a truly amazing Tumbler who moved up the ranks in a unbelievable short amount of time…she displayed her confidence tonight with no problems at all.
Tonight we broke in our new “Foam Backed Carpet Mats” with just some minor alterations to the mats and Mel’s excellent sewing (and some increased vocabulary due the Velcro) the “New Mats” worked just fine. A great big “Thanks” to my newest “Staff Member”… Ricky for his help with the setting up the performance.
Also we want to thank Deb Stevenson for inviting us to be a part of her entertainment for the evening.
… Till next Tumble Talk

Gary’s Tumbling Mays Update

Well we finished our first month of Summer Tumbling getting the Tumblers working on May’s “Legs” session. We introduced “Killers” and “Wall Sits” to all of the classes, this was quite different from the past working these new drills along with the “Jump Drills” as well. All the Tumblers did extremely well. Opps I forgot to mention that all the Tumblers were measured on their “Vertical” jumping skills also. This was interesting since some of the Tumblers measured -0 on their standing reach…but jumping +8 +9 +10…excellent job to all.

June also brought us more room in the gym with the removal of the stage. We will be able to run 4 sets of mats when needed. June also brought 2 new instructors in for “job shadowing…” Krissy has been working with Kassie Jo Finn the 4th 9th, and Ashley has been working with Buff. Keep up the good work you guys!!!

This summer may be Gina’s last teaching here at Glenwood this summer, for we just finalized our plans for her to open up Gary’s Tumbling in Wayne Nebraska. We are all so excited for her to get started with her program at Wayne. (Bone’s????) just kidding.
Gina will be running her program at the Wayne Community Activity Center. We visited the facility on Friday June 2nd. What a great facility…it just opened up in 2003 and has a great multi purpose room which Gina will be using for her classes. Be sure to wish her luck with her Tumbling Program.

Now lets talk about Bone’s for a bit…she will be having surgery on her shoulder June 6th due to a BACK LAYOUT she threw last December at UNO…what a remarkable individual… missing just a couple of performances and returning to finishing the year with a outstanding season. (I know she was hurting but would never tell me) So she will be out for around 4 months (6 months) and knowing Bone’s she’ll be back to finished her “Senior” year with another outstanding season. We all wish her a SPEEDY recovery…
(You will never hear me say “that was kinda low”…again). Hang in there Bone’s!!!

Well that’s about all for now, we will be updating on Junes activities toward the end of the month.

2006-04-11 Gary's Recap Of Season
Well the 2005 / 2006Tumbling Exhibition Season came to a close on March 30th. So I thought I would recap the season with some details of what both of my Exhibition Teams accomplished this year. First I’ll start with my Acrobatics Fanatics…what a great season for them. Starting with 23 performances… more than twice as many from last year., they all proved them selves to be worthy of performing “on the road” for the first time ever. And they all performed just awesome!!! They experience a whole new definition to the word “WARM-Up’s…that was quite a shock for some as they learned how we get crammed into narrow hallways to prepare for a performance. Some halls were great some were really scary, but as great performers they are…we all made it through the narrowness!!!

The Fanatic’s also got to experience of performing in front of a “First Time” crowd, that’s always an eye-opener for some for we all never quite know what to expect from the crowd, and the crowd never knows what to expect from us as well. But at the end of their performance everyone knew that the crowd had enjoyed their performance!!!
We experience our first “College” performance at Bellevue University and then to College of St Mary’s. We traveled to many new Iowa High Schools as well. Performing only 3 times at Glenwood we spent the rest of the season traveling…
The Fanatics all stayed in good health and injury free. They all worked extremely hard in the gym. I saw no signs from the team of getting tired or being uncomfortable with their routine. They worked hard to perfected not only their routine but their individual “Series” as well. I am so impressed on well they all pulled together as a “Team” and was able to increase the level of difficulty of their routines each week.

What a great season for new individual series, Angel always surprises me with a different series each week, (the most memorable will be at Riverside…you can’t throw a back tuck barefooted on the floor)..Kelcie???? still looking for that 5!!! Ashley likes to roll (a lot) in her series (control)…then we go to the Base / Bookends… Michaela works the hardest on her tumbling, for she never gives up and strives on perfection…Briana…SLOOOOOOW DOWN….
In next are the little ones… Sydney, Halie, Miranda, Sydney get thrown around like a rag doll…Miranda fly’s down the mat at super sonic speed…Halie is the worlds smallest base… but don’t let their sizes fool you, for they are fast becoming some excellent tumblers

I appreciated the Extra Effort of Sydney for filling in for the Fantastic Flyers and a HUGE thanks to Angel for all her “Double Duties” as well. They both were true team players practicing with both teams and learning both routines, Thanks so much for being there!!!
And of course all these performances and extra practices, team meetings could not have been possible without the outstanding support and efforts of the Acrobatic Fanatics Parents… I appreciate all that you do, and I am so proud of all your “Tumblers”!!!

There are so many who don’t realize what all these Tumblers need to do to maintain their position on the team. I covered just a few of them above. Many don’t know that they practice year around. They make the most difficult moves seem so simple and sometime it received no response, but the team always felt good about it… knowing that they worked weeks on perfecting it and as a TEAM they are always so proud of their accomplishment for that move… and the times when the crowd responded to a more simpler move… it didn’t matter to them for they always came back to me with that “We Nailed It” look.

2006-04-11 Gary's Recap Of Season
Hmmmm…a recap of this Exhibition Season for the Fantastic Flyers (this will be long).
Lets start from the first scheduled performance at IWCC this went well…sort of…we get to try our new “Folding Mats” I just purchased and I not quite sure they are going to work out. Then 3 days later… College of St Mary’s…I take Cheryl on an exciting car / trailer ride on icy I-80, we almost don’t make it to CSM…we hit a deer or lets say the deer ran into our trailer going home on Hwy 34, what a great start!!! Really starting to, have concerns regarding these new mats! Emily breaks her finger catching a basketball… she is out for what we thought 3-4 weeks….wrong…due to complication of healing she was out for almost the entire season. In comes Angel to help out (double duties for her)
then while performing at UNO my worst nightmare, these “New” mats actually come apart while performing…All the Team knew and they all tumbled around the problem…we were all very lucky!!! Alana rips her shoulder on a BACK LAYOUT…she is out for a short period of time…we are scheduled to perform at Wayne State the next day, a call is made to Gina to take Alana’s place, no problem here Gina has not tumbled with this team in 4 months, we’ll go up early and show her the routine (1 hour) and all will be fine!!! That went really well, then we performed, and Brittney lands her front lay out really bad and injured her thigh…she is out for a short time as well. (Told you this will be long).

Now its time to get ready for Creighton, In comes Gina again and now Sydney, Angle is already in…Lets do some math...Alana-Emily-Brittney-Kassie-Mallory will not be tumbling here
That leaves Katie-Montana-Jordan… actual team members…put in Gina, Angle, and Sidney that makes 6…time to rework the routine…

The only good that came out of all this mess was an extreme rare opportunity for a former team member (Gina) to ever get the chance to perform again with the team, and to only bring back some of the precious memories Cheryl and I have to see her tumble once again. You parents will know this feeling when your tumbler has tumble for their last time.

Well that was the first month… things started to get back to normal… somewhat, and the Fantastic Flyers began performing at new high schools we have not been to such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Avoca(not Pavoca Brit). Then we made our first appearance at some new colleges such as…The College of St Mary’s, Peru State, and Dana. The team performed a record number 37 times this season. They also did 3 day assemblies at some elementary schools in Iowa and Nebraska.

I don’t remember a time when we made up so many new stunts in a single season. All the bases worked extra hard on their strength end while the flyers worked on their form and strength as well. I have seen some series that are some of the most difficult series to be thrown this season. Alana’s back walk-out (when she not ripping her Shoulder) is simply amazing for she cannot really throw that in the gym. Katie’s series is outstanding when she stays on the mats (freight trains follow the tracks…follow the mats) Angel always surprises me for she must have 3-4 different series. Kassie too always surprises me for I never really know what’s she will throw next, I’ll simply just wait to catch her hen she done flying off the mat with a 9-10 series. Then there’s Brittney… she makes her series look so easy, she is pound for pound the strongest tumbler. Whether it’s her lighting fast unbelievable 8 back handsprings to her most difficult move… “Bounders” she usually along with Katie’s “GK” Alana’s Walk-out (when she’s not ripping her shoulder…6 months) is usually a crowd pleaser.

None of this is complete without the talent of Montana, Mallory, and Jordan…we put these flyers up in the most difficult stunts of all, week after week they come to practice and always put in 180%...never giving up and always willing to try…they are true meaning of the word TEAM as they continue to grow their series become more difficult and adds more excitement to the routine.
So we come to the end of the season with Emily returning after a long absent and all went really well both teams finished up with Back to Back performance at some dance and other program that we all got invited to.

We also wanted to say “Thanks Mallory Dark” and to Kelly and Eric for all their great support through out these years, What a honor it has been for me to have been a small part of Mallory life, to watch her grow from a class of beginner tumblers to a “Tiny Tot Tumbler” to a “Fantastic Flyer”. We all wish you all the best of luck in whatever you do, for I know you will excel, be dedicated, work hard, and be the best you can be, for I have seen this from you in your time with us and with the team. We will all miss you and your family.

As I said before there are so many who don’t realize what all these Tumblers need to do to maintain their position on the team. I covered just a few of them above. Many don’t know that they practice year around. They make the most difficult moves seem so simple and sometime it received no response, but the team always felt good about it… knowing that they worked weeks on perfecting it… and as a TEAM they are always so proud of their accomplishment for that move… and the times when the crowd responded to a more simpler move… it didn’t matter to them for they always came back to me with that “We Nailed It” look.

2006-03-10 Kelcie's (Buffs) Story "My Home"
“My Home”
By: Kelcie Craft

My life had been full of adventures. I’ve been to places where most would say their favorite place is. Well, mine isn’t like that, mine is just a basement.
My favorite place is Gary’s Tumbling. I’ve been going here for about 5-6 years. I love it so much. I always look forward to walking down those old rusty stairs, opening the door, and being washed over with happiness, laughter, fun, excitement, drive, and focus that each person demonstrates.
I love to hear about extra practices and exhibitions. When I walk into the basement I see people flying through the air, or little toddlers rolling down the mat. When I see this it is all the same to me I know they will work hard and be where everyone is today.
The sight I love the most is when someone is going for that move they’ve been working on, and then all of the sudden, “BOOM” they nail it. I love to see this joy spread all over their face and it fills you too because you know that you help put it there and you taught them that.
This place is a big part of my life. It is my home, my sanctuary, my haven. This is my resting place.
This is a place for everyone to come have fun, to relax, and to make friends. This has also taught me more. It has taught me to always strive and work for what you want. Make the best out of what you have. It has taught me to just have fun!
I absolutely love to go to practices. I step onto those mats, I feel the soft mats that feel like carpet, I can’t wait to get started.
We do our stretches, we feel the pain and strain in our muscles. The air is buzzing as everyone chats about school and track.
After stretches we do warm-up’s. Those are fun. Right when it’s is my turn to go Gina, Gary’s daughter, visits from college. We talk to her for a while but then it’s back to tumbling.
I love running down the mats going for a back tuck.
This place is so special to me. I’ve seen how hard it is to leave. I’ve seen the tears fall here. That won’t stop me though. I’ll never leave here, tumbling is my life. When I’m running down the mats with the wind in my face, and the smell of sweat, I love it. This place is my “home”.

Mrs. Driml

I remember sitting in my orthopedic surgeon’s office when he asked me how long I planned on being in tumbling. He asked me this because I was still in the recovering stage of my second knee surgery. About two years earlier I had torn my meniscus cartilage in my right knee and had meniscus repair had failed and I again had to have surgery, this time, though, the torn cartilage would be removed. When he asked me this question I thought for a short amount of time, then jokingly replied saying “until I’m 40!” he laughed, but never said that I should stop, he actually told me that I should be okay in doing that, just be careful. Who would have thought less than a year later he would ask me that same question, only when I jokingly replied, he would tell me that I should quit tumbling right now and if I continued, I would be lucky to make it through my senior year in high school. Instead of being problems with my knee, I had torn my labrum, which is cartilage, in my right shoulder while throwing a back flip.
I remember the night it happened perfectly. My group, the Fantastic Flyers, was performing half-time for both the University of Nebraska in Omaha Maverick girl’s and guy’s half-times. We had just got done performing for the girl’s and were having a group meeting discussing how we did and what we could do better during the guy’s half time. Slowing going around the circle, Gary talked to each and every one of the eight people. I was last. When he came around to me, he looked at me and said, “What happened out there, your back flip is usually higher.” After hearing this, I kept my eye contact and quickly thought about if I had actually gone low or if he was just kidding with me like usual. The serious look on his face told me he was not joking. After seeing this I replied, “I’ll do better next half-time.” While waiting for the guy’s half-time I practiced my back flip about 5 times, each time going higher than the one before. When half-time drew nearer I thought to myself, I got this, no problem. Half-time finally came and the beginning of our routine and first runs went great. Now we were preparing for the “GK” stunt and it was time for my back flip. I took a deep breath, set up, and ran towards the mats. Once I reached a spot right before the middle, I threw my round-off preparing for my back flip. Slowly I drove my arms in the direction I thought was up and oh no, a loud pop and pain jutting through my arm. I landed it, and thought to myself while exiting off the mats, I’m fine, it’s nothing, it will go away in a few seconds. I was wrong though. The pain increased throughout the rest of the routine, through five lifts, seven back handsprings, and another back flip. The pain caused tears to form in my eyes, but I couldn’t stop. There was now way I could let my team down, especially in the middle of a performance. Finally the performance came to and end, we picked up the mats, and headed to the side of the court where again we would have a group meeting. I tried my hardest to keep a calm, straight face while Gary talked to us all. After everyone was ready to leave I burst into tears and told Gay what had happened. At this point, the pain was so intense that I couldn’t even lift my arm up straight like I was raising my hand. Gary could see the pain I was in because of the tears that were rolling down my cheeks. He told me that I should ice it and see what happened by tomorrow.
Tomorrow came and no difference. Upon hearing this Gary made me sit out and not tumble until I could move my arm and use it with out pain. All I could think was “what am I going to do, tumbling is my life.” A week passed and no change, I still couldn’t lift my arm. Because of the continuing pain, I met with my orthopedic surgeon, who less than a year earlier had done my second knee surgery. When I got there he first checked my range of motion and what happened when pressure was applied in different angles to my arm. The next step was taking an x-ray to see if a piece of bone might have chipped off and was floating around in my shoulder. I laughed at the idea of that, I mean honestly, how a piece of bone could chip off when I only threw my arms in the air, it wasn’t like I ran into anything. But the x-ray was procedure and it was required. When the x-ray was read it showed just what I expected, no bone. The next stet was to wait a week, then if pain persisted, get an MRI done.
The week passed by slowly. Good news, some of the pain had left, but I still didn’t’ have full motion of my arm, so my orthopedic surgeon thought it best that I get the MRI. The 45 minutes in the long tube seemed like an eternity, all I could think of was what could I have done? Since my MRI was done on a Friday, I wouldn’t be until Monday when I got my results.
Finally Monday came, but no results. I was devastated because I was suppose to perform at Creighton University that night, but since I didn’t get the results I once again had to sit on the side lines and watch Gina fill in for ME, and do MY part. My heart dropped, I was supposed to be out there.
When Tuesday came I finally got my results. They were given quickly to my mom by the doctor’s assistant, so I wasn’t told what I could do or how bad it really was. The only information given to my mom and me was that I had an interior, inferior tear of my labrum cartilage. Upon hearing this news it felt like my heart stopped, Gary had told me if I tore something I would probably be out for a while, and tumbling had been my life for so long.
A few days later, I learned that my tear wasn’t that bad, meaning I could tumble, letting pain be my guide. I’ve slowly struggled through these past couple of months of tumbling, hiding the pain so I don’t have to sit out. I figure if I’ve gone this long, I can make it. If the pain continues, I will have to have surgery this summer, but hopefully I will make it through my senior year with no more problems. I realized this was my moment of truth because after my knee, I thought nothing like this could ever happen to me, but it did, and it was all because I was unsatisfied with my first performance and over did it during the second performance causing me to almost have to give up tumbling, my life, forever.

When I think about tumbling the first thing that comes to my mind is the camaraderie that we all had. We did everything together and I feel that we used tumbling as a release. When we were excited, we had the energy to throw unexpected new tricks. When we were tired, we would push each other to try harder. When we were upset, we used that as power to make our passes stronger. We all had a similar passion for movement, we loved being active and being in the spotlight! I remember in 6th grade (’93-’94) trying to do a back-hand-spring in the gym at recess. I had always loved doing back walkovers so Katie Denham convinced me that if I could do that I could do a back-hand-spring. When we had bad weather outside they always put out the wrestling mat in the gym and we got to play inside. There was a big mailbox looking mat/cushion thing that she brought over. She said to do a back walkover but really fast and lean into this mat. So eventually it became jumping backwards into this mat and falling the rest of the way over it. Which built up my confidence enough to try it without. I definitely fell on my head. Then I remember going to my dad’s house and he lived on a lake so I would practice them in the water. I would start pretty deep and work my way to the shore. Eventually I was on the sand and out of the water completely! Then I would try it on his trampoline. But I never had a place to do this regularly, and feel confident to be able to do them on the ground with no spotting. Then Gary started the Fantastic Flyers. He worked with me so much trying to get me doing my back-hand-spring. He finally said that he had his hand behind my back, and he would pat me to prove he was there. I threw myself back and for the first time my arms didn’t collapse on me! I did end up landing on my knees, but it was the beginning! I had a really hard time adding the round off. I stopped myself after the round off and would just do a standing back-hand-spring! I don’t know if it was the excitement of performing in front of people, but the first time that I didn’t completely stop between was at the first dance recital performance. After that first live performance I was so excited because now I could do more new passes! I will have to say that Katie Denham was always my little devil on my left shoulder. She was always the one that pushed and bribed me to go a little further (which I am so grateful for)!! She told me that she would give me $10 if I just threw a round off back flip. I had NEVER done a back flip before, but for $ you had to at least try. I remember that Gary was not at the mat ready for spotting because I didn’t tell him what I was doing. He always stands close, but I ran and threw it but just didn’t put my hands down. If you have ever seen me tumble you know that I do NOT know how to tuck. So my first back flip was a back layout, (that wasn’t pretty) and I barely missed landing on my face, but I landed!! I won the $10! I honestly thought that Gary was going to kill us for that one! After that Gary always made us say what we were about to do, and he kept pushing us to be better and better! I remember carrying Gina around on my hip! I think we thrived on proving to the younger girls that if we could do more, so could they. Gary was always the heart and soul of the team. He would always give us so much praise! We are all better people because of it! I was so sad that I had to move, but it gave me such an advantage at my new school. To make the cheerleading squad you pretty much had to be able to tumble. Thank you for your dedication, commitment, and friendship! You better believe that when I come to visit I want to get back in the gym!!

Sadly it is almost the last exhibition of the season. Even though we have all gotten hurt in one place or another and we have gone through some tough times we have stuck together like a real team should. You can’t have a team without trust, it will never work and I think we all know that. We not only trust each other to get the stunts up but we all trust each other with everything in every way. When I walk into the gym I know that no matter what everyone there will accept me for who I am and they like me the way that I am. I like to know that no matter what we will all stand side by side no matter what obstacles come our way. We learn and teach each other and I am proud to say that I(and I think everyone else can do this to) can tell you one thing about every girl that they have accomplished in there own way whether it was something physical or emotional. I love every single one of those girls because they are different but in there own ways….if I had to say something unique about every girl in my group I know what I would say…Katie- Katie always cheers everyone no matter were we are I can hear her yelling and cheering no matter how much of a bad “routine day” we are having. Alana- is the oldest and she knows that she needs to help in every way….she does a very good job! Emily- has been gone but she is a very strong person that will never give up no matter how far behind she is. Angel-angel is my hero that would never…..ever….let her team(s) down! Brittney- Brittney is a funny girl who can make anyone laugh no matter what kind of a mood they are in. Mallory-is a very quiet girl but you gotta love that cute little face! Montana- Montana will set goals for herself and accomplish them in a matter of minutes! Jordan- Jordan doesn’t talk much but when she does she will automatically make me smile, because I don’t think I have ever heard something negative come out of her mouth! Kassie(me)- or should I say “Kassie JO Finn the 4th/9th”- I cant stand it when someone is sad and I want to help with anyone’s problems in any way that I can! During this season we have come along way, not only have we gotten stronger but we have become closer as a family…I don’t mean to brag but we are the perfect example of what the definition of TEAM is! GOOD JOB THIS YEAR GIRLS! WE DID IT!

“Gina Bug, you’ll be alright,” my Dad said “take some deep breaths, relax, you’re going to do great, I know it.”
I was crying, telling my Mom, Dad, and my Brother I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t go out there and do the routine in front of all those people, I was too scared.
Lights turn off, applause and shouting came from the crowd, my stomach was going crazy, Dad wiped the tears off of my cheeks, and I got up and stood in between my Dad and Brother.
“You got it, Sis.” reassured my brother Adam as he pats my shoulder.
Standing there, still nervous as all can be, waiting to hear our song “Mr. Vain” so we could start our routine. The music finally starts after what seems like an eternity, lights turned on, I looked out into the audience to see if I can make any faces out, but thank God I couldn’t see anything but shadows.
I continued on with the routine, and just like that it’s over. Lights shut off, the loudest applause and shouting I’ve ever heard filled the auditorium.
“You did great Gina Bug!! You are the bravest six-year-old I’ve ever met!” said my dad after we got off stage.
“See sis, all the crying and worrying and you did awesome!” said Adam.
And the only thing I said to everyone who was telling me how well I did was, “Let’s do it again!”
Ever since that show in 1992, I have never loved any hobby or pastime more than I love tumbling.
Tumbling has been my life since “before I was walking” as my dad would tell anyone who asked. I grew up tumbling, and still continue to do it today, not only did I love tumbling, but it was something I could do with my brother and dad.
I have been tumbling for the past 14 years, and have never hated a minute of it. It was the only thing I could do that wasn’t stressful like sports or anything else for me personally.
I never gave up on anything when it came to tumbling, and because of that I realize now that as long as I work my hardest for something the best will come of it. There is one example that I can particularly remember of when I got into the mindset to finish what I start, and it involved a certain tumbling move.
It was the year of 1994, and it was time to learn an aerial (cartwheel without hands).
“Alright Gina Bug, let’s give this a shot,” said Dad. “Let’s try this aerial.”
“Okay!” I said. So there I went, I threw a one-handed cartwheel. That’s the best I could do at the time. So I worked and worked for two years!!
1996 rolls around, “Aerials!” Dad said to everyone.
My turn, I’m set up, sick and tired of putting my hands down for the past two years, I’m ran, I took off, threw it, and my hands didn’t hit!
Every single person in the gym at that time ran up to me picked me up and started screaming, it was the greatest feeling in the world! Ever since that day I knew that if I work my hardest, no matter how long it takes I will succeed.
Tumbling had a huge effect on my life, it’s shaped me in more ways than one. First off it taught me to keep working hard for things and sooner or later something great will happen and last but not least it showed me how hard it is to let go of something and have to move on and watch everyone else do something you love to do.
Tumbling also showed me what it’s like to do something you love just for you and not for anyone else. I was never pressured into tumbling just because my Dad owned the business, I just wanted to do nothing else but tumble. Granted I was in sports in high school, but nothing ever compared to my love for tumbling.
After 14 years of tumbling, came graduation, and of course followed by graduation came moving away from home and leaving the thing I’ve loved to do all my life. I didn’t think it would be as hard as it was, I didn’t realize how important tumbling was to me until I couldn’t do it anymore as a “group member”. Now, all I can do is go back home and come in as “alumni” and watch the other girls tumble the way I used to.
On my last tumbling exhibition at our high school, my Dad asked for a few extra minutes at the half time to “honor” me and my best friend Kristina. He wanted to honor us for all the hard work, memories, and dedication given to him and everyone else throughout our time in tumbling. This was by far the hardest moment for both my Dad and I as he handed me flowers and hugged and kissed me in front of everyone at the game. This was my last show as a “Fantastic Flyer” (that’s the name of our exhibition group), and it was the best performance that I ever had.
Being in tumbling has given me a hobby to enjoy to this day, and the fact that my family was so involved made things even better. To this day, I continue to do tumbling, and I’m hoping to possibly start some kind of tumbling program here in Wayne within the next four years. Hopefully I could maybe give someone else a hobby that will be as important to them as it was to me.

2006-01-13 Fantastic Flyers 100th Performance
This was the “Fantastic Flyers” 100th performance with Gary’s Tumbling since we went on our own and starting keeping performance records starting in 2001.
A real special “Thank You” to all the Parents and the Tumblers for a clever surprise announcement before their performance.
That totally caught me off guard!!!
It’s so hard to think back of all the former Tumblers and Parents that made this 100th performance possible. I also wish that I could trace back to 1993 when it all started but I guess I would have never known that 13 years later, the Fantastic Flyers would still be going strong!!! So whether it’s the 100th, or who knows maybe it’s the 300th performance, I’ll always be so grateful to all the Tumblers and Parents who made it all so possible.
And as I have always said “Its more than just about Tumbling, a whole lot more”!!!

2006-01-12 Cheerleading Update from Jordanne Batten

1/12/2006

Hey Everyone.
Jordanne - AKA STRETCH 2- here. Tumbling just started back up again after winter break and I was so sore after the first practice! But I’m glad to get back into the swing of things. I tried to make it to the gym over break, so coming back wouldn’t be as hard on me, but my effort failed!!!
Cheerleading is going good, we've had a few girls quit, but I guess that was there own selfish choices. For any of your future GHS athletes, once you make a commitment, stick with it. Because it hurts the whole team if you don’t. But as of right now, we have a competition on Sunday. We've worked so hard learning our routines, and hopefully it all pays off. We seem to work better and learn more when we are under pressure. We've learned more this whole week than we did for the two months we started preparing.
Tumbling has helped me with so much in cheerleading. Its keeps my jumps higher and really keep me in shape.
I'll update more after our competition!! I'll make sure Ms. Mingo and Ms. Isadore do too.

2006-01-04 Fantastic Flyers Day Assembly
The “Fantastic Flyers” visited St Albert’s School Wednesday January 4th in the afternoon with a “Day Assembly”. The students maintained their attention by being entertained by the Fantastic Flyers warm-ups. They got a close-up and personal view of what it takes to be a “Power Tumbler”. After the warm-up and some “Partner Stunting” practice, it was time to watch the Fantastic Flyers Exhibition Performance. The students were in awe as the Flyers did what they do best… they flew, flipped, balanced on one another, and turned in the air as they performed their exhibition routine.
At the end of their performance there was a “Question and Answer” session for the Power Tumblers… Then the students got another chance to watch the Fantastic Flyers as they performed their routine one more time.
What is so fun at these day assemblies is that none of the “Tumblers” as well as myself have any idea of just what we are going to be demonstrating for the crowd, they may be asked to do front rolls back roll, cartwheels, ect.
I always love to see the expressions on your faces when asked to perform certain moves… (This keeps all of you…as they say on your toes!!!)
But as usual I’ll pick on Bone’s to show her disgusting flexibility demonstration which usually hurts everyone watching…as she is heard giggling in some of the… lets say not really human positions???
Then there’s Angle and her “Split Lift” which left most of the crowd in more pain to finish up the warm-up.
The performance went well as Montana Blu threw I think 6-7 Back Handsprings, and JK was flying faster than before, Kassie Jo ended her series with a back tuck pretty much on the HARD FLOOR…And of course this or any performance would not be complete without one last comment….STRETCH….. STAY ON THE MATS!!!!!!!!!!

A Special Thanks to Laurie Crow for taking the pic’s.

Performing the Assembly was Bone’s, Stretch, Angle, Kassie Jo, Montana Blu, and JK.

Excellant Job to all of you!!!

2005-12-23 Gary's Journal 12/23/2005
I was just thinking of what a crazy last 4 months it has been. It all started with scheduling 54 performances this season for both groups…this is the most performances we have ever done to date. That was really exciting at the time, things would change soon, trust me on this one. Moving on…I was really excited to order some new Foam Backed Carpet Mats for the exhibition groups, these were so nice to Tumbling on…light weight, 6 foot wide, great shock absorbing, these were so nice that Melanie made some great covers to protect them from getting dirty…things will change here as well…Then both groups ordered “New Warm-Ups” and “New Outfits”…they are great, probably they only “New” thing that has worked out so far!!!

Now starts the “Fun” times…on our way to the College of St Mary’s I take Cher and the trailer on a exciting ride…some of you may have seen us as we faced the wrong direction on I-29…luckily no damages. Well we made CSM on that windy snowy night, just to warm-up in an extremely small hallway with no ceiling height. We performed as usual with no problems and the Flyers did awesome. So it’s off to home after an exciting night of events to meet a buck who decided to try to jump between the Jeep and the Trailer and never made it…my new trailer really looks great now, we’ll have to wait till spring to get it fixed.

We had a great time at the West day assembly, and the first GHS performance of the year was a little more exciting as Angle was or lets make this sound more appropriate almost throwing-up seconds before performing for “BOTH” games…but she was fine after the second game. This is good too…Dimples breaks her pinky from someone throwing a “Basketball” at her…its now December 23rd and she still out…so I put Angle in to fill her spot hoping she’ll be able to keep from throwing-up before performing (sorry I can’t seemed to find the right word). We lose the engine in our Red Jeep, this means no trailer.

Well moving on… I had to cancel the Bellevue University performance due to bad weather, I really did not want that to happen. The next couple of performances went well, Angle and Sid were filling in and doing an outstanding job!!! The it was off to UNO for our first performance of the season there…two things come to mind here, I’ve been concerned of the Mats not laying flat, I been in touch with my supplier and nothing has been done or said what to do…and then my worst nightmare comes true…one of the mats actually comes apart during our performance, all the team saw the problem and worked around the mat. Excellent thinking from the team saved many problems that could have happened. Bones and I reworked the mats for the next performance and it seemed to help some. On our second performance at UNO the mats were somewhat better but Bone’s decide to tear her shoulder on a amazing back-layout…(extremely high)…..We’re set to perform at Wayne State the next day and Bone’s is out…Hmmmm it’s a call to Gina at Wayne and ask if she wants to Tumble tomorrow…no problem here… she hasn’t Tumble in 4 months… don’t know the routine, life is good!!! Off to Wayne…

Wayne went well with Gina learning the routine is about 45 minuets. Well I thought all was well…Brit decides to pull a thigh muscle during the performance with her lay-out… (Been throwing this move for years) Brits out!!! This will be our last time using the “New” Carpet Mats for I feel they are not going to work out or ever lay flat. I need to make something happen real quickly for we have so many performances to do. As of right now I’m hoping to have 3 new “Red” mats sent to me before Dec.31st. This may determine what we may or may not do as far as performing, time will tell on this one.
So I start doing the evaluation: ”Dimples out, Bones out, Brit out, ISD coming up Acrobatic Fanatic will have to do both games, Glitter pulls a hamstring during warm-ups…she’s out…lets see what’s next??? Oh Creighton is next, as I see the evaluation above, I have no bases, in comes Gina again to perform at Creighton, but I had to re-work the routine with only 6 due to more problems.

Well Creighton went well, it was probably one of the most important performances, for I believe that we were evaluated for a possibility of performing for a Men’s game at the Quest Center next year. That’s ok maybe next year we will get another chance!!!

So let’s see where we are now…Bone’s is set to return…Brit is uncertain…Dimples not sure yet… Glitter is set… Angle seems to be keeping everything down…haven’t heard anything on the mats that we are not using anymore…my Red Jeep is still not done getting a new engine put in… we have 32 more performances’ set with no replacement mats yet…And some say “You know how Gary gets” (this might be some of the explanation). Thank goodness for Cher who has been a tremendous help to getting us through all these “fun times”… and more.

I can only hope that the start of the new year will be better, and I appreciate all the help that the parents and the Tumblers have gave for without them many of the performances would had been cancelled…With all of the problems and events that have happened I hope you are as excited as we are with the rest of the season performances.

Hi everyone,
Well on 11-29 was our first performance at GHS. We all did an awesome job. Some had a few bumps along the way but over all it was great. It was a long night 2 performances in one night so we were all pretty tired after we were done. The crowd was great we had alot of enthusiasm from other tumblers as well as our own on our team. So thank you all for that and over all it was a great performance and everyone if you get the chance should really come and watch and support all the hard work that the team puts forward. We will perform again Saturday so we\'ll see how it goes.

CONFESSIONS OF A TUMBLER’S MOTHER

Gary requested a “mom’s” version of things for the online journal, so here you go.

It seems like I have been watching these girls tumble forever. If I remember correctly, Emily started out with Gary when she was in 2nd grade. He used to have to chase her around the gym to get her to try the stunts like standing on his shoulders!

Some faces have come and gone, but this core group of girls we have now in the two exhibition groups have two things in common – they stick it out, and they work really hard. Most of the moms (and sometimes dads) stay to watch the practices each week so we see the work that goes into the exhibitions. One thing that really stands out is the encouragement the girls give each other. They are just as happy for each other as they are for themselves when someone hits a new move. Then during break time, they flop down on the mats like girls at a slumber party and talk and giggle.

This year is really different in that we have a very heavy schedule. Lots of travel time, schedule changes, extra practices etc. The parents, almost without exception, are at every performance. They are such a nice group of people. Everyone is willing to pitch in whether it be driving each other’s kids if needed, ordering the uniforms and warm-up outfits, helping out at the yearly exhibition in April. We see dads carrying mats, moms fixing outfits and scrunchies and, most of all, parents cheering on the girls – each parent just as supportive of the others as they are of their own daughter.

It is a real treat to watch the girls get “pumped up” to perform. It seems like even if they have a practice that doesn’t go exactly right; they always turn it on for the crowd. It is fun to hear the “oohs and aahs” of the crowd when they do their stunts.

The moms joke that we are chauffeurs, seamstresses, cooks, go-fers, cheerleaders, medics. schedule keepers, and music critics for the groups. Most of all I think we are just in awe of these girls out there flipping through the air like it’s the easiest thing in the world.

It has been great to see these girls go from struggling with a back handspring to doing aerials and back layouts with ease. It has also been a treat to see them go from cute little girls to lovely young women. It seems like even the little flyers are just growing up before our eyes.

So – this mom anyway – thoroughly enjoys all aspects of having a daughter in an exhibition group. Gary and Cheryl are just great with the kids make us feel like one big extended family. So thank you Gary and Cheryl, thank you parents, and thank you girls for making it all so fun.

Tumble Talk October 4, 2005
Hey Everyone!

Well fall tumbling has started back up and Im sorta getting the swing of things again. It doesnt help much that I didnt do summer tumbling. Big Mistake.
Not only was I out of shape, I couldnt do the stuff I normally could do in my sleep!

But as of now, Im in a "Cheerleading" class where we just work on our jumps and cheerleading form more than tumbling form. But since the cheerleaders can now tumble, this season of tumbling is going to be crucial for my cheerleading.

I recommend for any future cheerleaders that u stick with tumbling - it helps alot. And it keeps you in great shape. I can tell u right now that of all the cheerleaders, the tumblers look the best when we jump and do minor stunting or tumbling.

Well if you tumble with me, see you Saturday, otherwise Good Luck and have an awesome year in tumbling!

Journal 9/21/2005

The new Fall season has started and the kids are off to a great start. We have already had a ton of impovement and we as teachers love to see that. I teach the 4-5 year olds and also the 7-8 which they have all been a total blast. When they come in they are ready to start and are ready to work hard while having fun at the same time. I really hope the kids enjoy me as a teacher because I love doing it and it is so fun just to see them try something new and move right on to the next school. Once again we will be working of arms or legs each month and this month is arms so at the half of the hour we all drop down for 15 push-ups which will help the kids with all their skills. I hope that all this hard work and determination really pays off for the April exibition which should be a blast and I hope we have a lot more new moves to show off in April. I hope all the kids continue to work hard and enjoy what I have to offer.

Both the Fantastic Flyers and the Acrobatic Fanatics performed at Keg Creek Days in Glenwood on Saturday. The weather was on the HOT side and so were both groups!!! Although both groups had to rework their routines before performing. they were all excellent!!!
Special thank you to Dave, Eric and Running Man Jim for all their help spotting the Tumblers!!!!
Its now back to the gym, to start getting ready for Basketball Season and new routines. Both groups have some new and exciting stunts and tumbling runs.

"1992-2005"

This is the day I hoped would never come, where I will have to write about my Gina. Gina has been Tumbling with me since day one, she was tumbling before walking, and at just turning 6 years old was competing with Adam Giaffoglione, Katie Denham, Ashley Lothrop, Amanda Swanson, and myself, in National Competitions with a group called 6 and Up in 1992. This group later became The Fantastic Flyers. She is the last member of that group to finish up her career as a Fantastic Flyer. Ginas performing in these groups span 13 years. This will be most years anyone has ever performed with the Fantastic Flyers or any of my exhibition groups.

Gina has been my Head Instructor for years and has spent more time in the gym then any other, despite her extremely busy schedule she could always be found in my gym either teaching or just stopping by to see the kids, or helping me with what ever needs to be done. When performing her tremendous leadership and the ability to get both the team members and the crowd pumped-up were outstanding. Her constant positive attitude and continuing drive to do her best will be missed, she had tons of energy and always enjoyed performing.

So many of the Stunts and Tumbling moves were created with or by Gina and are still used in todays routines.

As Gina will be moving on but never forgotten, she leaves behind her legacy, one that will continue forever for many of my Tumblers to learn from, as Gina has been an outstanding role model for so many to follow.

Mom and I are so proud of what you have become, both in and out of the gym.

Love Mom and Dad

From 6 and Up to Fantastic Flyers, to wishing I could do it all over again!

When asked to put down a few thoughts about my years in tumbling, I had to stop and think for a while!

Where should I start?

Tumbling was always a huge part of my life. It all started with 6 and Up. Wow! I remember meeting in the gym every weekend; practicing, stunting, flipping and flopping, creating our very first routine! I think I could still remember it today(that might be because I still watch old tapes! Yes, I admit it!!!)

I loved being a part of 6 and Up and Fantastic Flyers! There wasnt a time that I can remember that I didnt want to go to tumbling! We had so much fun. We performed outside, inside, on soccer fields, on basketball courts, on huge stages, on tiny stages (I remember Gary walking across a stage in about 5 steps wondering how in the world we would do our routine, but we did!) anywhere we could, we tumbled!

My years with Gary taught me so much more than just the tumbling skills, and gave me so much confidence in myself! We were more than just a group that performed together we were like family. We cheered each other on, we picked each other up off the ground, literally at times, (remember recital when I fell on my head Gary?) we pushed each other to the limit, and we believed in each other! Cant was never, and still isnt today, a part of the vocabulary of a tumbler with Gary. If you say you cant then you might as well not try because youve already lost the battle. Not everything comes easy, and you should all remember that!

One of my favorite things about tumbling was surprising Gary. He usually likes to know what you are about to attempt when running down the mat, but not with this MUG. I think I might have contributed to that hair loss a time or two! ;-) How was I suppose to tell him what I was going to do if I didnt even know!

If you cant tell, tumbling still is one of my favorite activities! Even though I might be a little rusty, I love stopping in at the gym, watching all the little ones, and you older kids tumble like we used to! You are all so lucky to be a part of such a wonderful TEAM and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I have Gary to thank for the tumbler I became. I couldnt have asked for a better coach!

Fantastic Flyers News

On June 11th the Flyers performed at the Relay for Life. . It was a really HOT day. We set up the mats on the football field, but since the ground was uneven the mats wouldnt stay flat. Gary decided it would be safer for us to tumble on the grass. That was a lot of fun. It was kind of hard keeping the spacing even since we are used to the distance on the mats. Bones and Stretch wouldnt have stayed on the mat anyway since they did so many back handsprings I lost count, and Britt does hers so fast she is just a blur. The crowd seemed to enjoy the performance. Thanks to all the yelling Moms! We can hear you out there!!!

Practices are fun as usual. The flyers are nice and light and the bases are getting stronger thanks to all the HANDSTAND PUSHUPS Gary has us doing. Since there are two new members (Dimples and Stretch) after Gina and Kristina graduated, we are figuring out who stunts best with who. We are learning lots of neat new moves, like the Orangutan (how did you do that, Gina?) and working on getting our dive rolls up higher in the air. Kassie Jo was the guinea pig while Stretch, Bones and Dimples dived over her. Everyone made it!!!!!!

The younger flyers are working on their aerials and doing really well. Dimples is happy Gary is letting her do her aerials again they dont hurt! We are getting ready to order our new leotards for the exhibition season. They are red, white and blue and should be really flashy. We are really looking forward to the exhibitions this year. Everyone who reads this COME WATCH US. The more the merrier.

Congrats to Kassie Jo and her diving in the Cornhusker games and Montana Blu, quit pulling your teeth at practice (haha).

Thats all for now.

I have been teaching for about 2 months now and love it. I have so much fun with all the kids, and I hope they really enjoy and can really learn from me as a teacher. This past month we have been working on strengthening our arms which I think will greatly help the kids in their tumbling skills.
I hope to see the kids really improve and most have already. I love when a class shows up and wants hugs and is ready to work hard and tumble. In the classes that Angel and I teach we are working really hard on out skills and some have really worked hard and come far. We hope to see more of this in the future. Right now we are teaching the younger kids, and we basically work on rolls, dive rolls, split rolls, back rolls. We also work on front walkovers and back walkovers, cartwheels, t-wheels, round-offs, and some have even gotten to front handsprings. Like I said earlier, I have enjoyed teaching and hope this improvement and hard work continues.
Along with teaching I tumble myself and would have to say that is my favorite thing to do. It is just such a blast and is a good way to exercise while having fun. That is Gary's number one rule always have fun. It has been that way from day one. I am in an exhibition group which is even more fun working hard with the team and getting new moves and stunts is the best. The teams go and perform at basketball games and other activities. This is another fun thing that shows that hard work, commitment, and the willingness to try new things and have fun really pay off.
Teaching and tumbling are a big thing and the number one thing in my life and I hope to continue doing both.

Summer at Garys Tumbling
Monday, June 20, 2005

This summer at Garys Tumbling is really fun. Every other month we focus more on either arms or legs. This month were working on arms. The kids will do board push-ups and wall push-ups (either standing or handstand push-ups) to strengthen their arms, which will help them with moves like handstands, front handsprings, and back handsprings. Next month well work on legs which consists of board jumps and jump roping. Board jumps focus on speed and coordination. Each kid is allowed 20 seconds to see how many jumps they can get in the given time. Jump roping also focuses on speed, coordination and strengthening their legs making them better jumpers. The kids jump for 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Everyday when the kids arrive, they come out on the mat when they are instructed to and begin with jump roping. After they finish jump roping, the kids return to the main mat, where they start stretching. They do various stretches to loosen up theyre leg, arm, back, and stomach muscles. After stretching, the kids work on splits and balance. Some of the different balances that the kids work on are front, back and side scales, heel stretches, bow and arrows, and broken hips. When balances are finished, they will either do theyre wall and board push-ups or their board jumps, depending on which theyre focusing on that month. After push-ups or jumps, the kids then start out with basic warm-ups, which are front and back rolls, front and back walkovers, cartwheels and round-offs, then they move on the handsprings. Newer students will work on perfecting the basics and later move on to more advanced moves. More advance kids will start perfecting front handsprings, KJs, layouts, suicides, aerials, back handsprings and back tucks. When half of the class time is up, the kids will drop for 15 push-ups, which work on strengthening their arms, which helps with front and back handsprings. At the end of the class all the students group-up with their instructor and talk about what they did, their favorite moves, and what they will be working on the next week.
As an instructor, working with the kids is fun and enjoyable, and you are able to get to know them and help them to become better tumblers.
2005-06-16 "My Last Tumble"
Hey everyone! Its Gina Bug, and I just wanted to let everyone know how much I love tumbling and much Im going to miss it and all the kids Ive gotten to know!!

Tumbling has always been a part of my life since before I can remember. It all started when I was six years old and landing on my back every time I tried to throw a front handspring. (Yup, believe it or not I had plenty of landings on my backside when I was little, weve all had our fair share.) The six of us Dad, Adam, Katie, Ashley, Mandy, and I tumbling in the Northeast Elementary gym making up routines for our next competition we were signed up for. Competing was fun, but in a way Im glad we got out of that and just started doing it for fun.

Well that was back in the day and here I am, in 3 days, going to have my Last Tumble as a Fantastic Flyer EVER :-(

Its crazy!! I cant believe how much Im going to miss it! I know Im going to miss the tumbling itself a TON!! But I think even more so Im going to miss the girls in the group and the kids Ive helped teach. Kristina (Nina), Alana (Bones), Kassie (Kassie Jo), Brittany (Brit), Montana (Montana Blu), Jordan (J.K.) Mallory (Mallory Dark) and Katie (Stretch) you guys are awesome!! You are awesome tumblers and most of all awesome people! Its been a blast being able to tumble with you and get to know you. Weve made some memories that Ill never forget (Im pretty sure you guys wont either), weve had some questions (Special Diet?) ,some sicknesses (Wayne State) ;-), some broken bones, and some crazy Photo Opts that well never forget! And I just wanted to give you guys a HUGE THANK YOU!!! For everything that weve done together, and you know its going to KILL me when I come back next year and cant be out there with you guys at half time tumblingBut I know you guys will be awesome!! And I cant wait to come back and see you!! :-)

The other thing Im going to miss the most is all the kids Ive taught! Ive had some kids since day one!! I cant believe how awesome you guys are!! Ive gotten to know a lot of kids in tumbling over the years and you guys have all come so far!! Its been a blast being an instructor and even though Im the one that supposed to be teaching you, you guys have taught me a lot too! Some days I could just hang out in the gym with the kids all day and have the time of my life! You guys are soooo much fun!!! Im going to miss coming down to the gym and all the hugs and high fives from everyone, and Im going to miss watching a kid get a move theyve been working on, for what seems like ever, and then they NAIL IT!! Thats the best feeling as a tumbler I know, and as that tumblers instructor, its an ever greater feeling!! Thank you soo much to all the kids Ive taught and all the kids Ive gotten to know through tumbling! You guys made my tumbling career the best anyone could hope for!!

I also want to say thank you to my mom and dad!! You guys are AWESOME!! Tumbling is the only thing that I did through out schooling that I can honestly say I loved every minute of it! And if it werent for you, I would have never been able to experience that!! Its the only thing I did that was fun at all times and wasnt stressful at all! I know that this is the last tumble for Kristina and I but, well be back to practices and stuff when were home from college, I promise!! So thank you soooo much for everything! I LOVE YOU!! :-*

So this Saturday is that last time for Kristina and I to be performing with the Fantastic Flyers and I just wanted to say Good Luck to everyone, thank you for everything, and Ill miss you!!

2005-03-03 March Madness Surprise
Hey Everyone!

This is the first time I've done an article here on Garystumbling.com but I just wanted to tell everyone that if you want to see quite a show you should head on down to the High School on March 18th ! Dad, Kristina and I have put together a new type of entertainment that I think you will get a kick out of!

This "new entertainment" will perform at the half time of the Student vs. Faculty game, so not only will you see an awesome half time show, it should be a pretty fun game to watch too!

So, if you have time and want to see this "new entertainment", head on down to the high school gym on Friday March 18th, the game starts at 7:05 p.m.

Thanks! :)

2005-01-25 A very busy Performing Year
What a busy start of the new year for both the Acrobatic Fanatics and the Fantastic Flyers, both groups have been working extra hard on their routines and individual series. The Acrobatic Fanatics will be appearing at their first Varsity game Friday February 28th; this should be an exciting time for the group as they step-up to the next level of performing. The Acrobatic Fanatic will then continue their performances with a performance at ISD and then more Varsity Games at GHS. Good luck to all Im so proud of all your accomplishments to get to this level of performances!!!

The Fantastic Flyers have been quite busy as well their season started with performances at IWCC, UNO, and Creighton universities. Then they performed at a Boys Varsity game and got ready for our first Road Trip to Wayne State University. This was quite a exciting experience as we all got geared up to go. Making the trip to Wayne included
Car #1 Me, Cheryl, Gina, Kristina.
Car #2 Jim Finn (poor Guy) Kassie, Brit, Katie, Michaela, Leah.
Car #3 Eric, Kelly, Mallory (Dark) Montana, Jordyn.
Car #4 Joey, Kristine met us up there.
I just wanted to thanks to all who made the 21/2 drive on that windy cold night, but that didnt stop the Flyers from performing at both the Womens and Mens game They did a exceptional job considering all that was going on. A Special Thanks to Stretch for all her help at the performance.

2004-12-18 December Classes
The Special December Classes would not have been possible without the efforts and time of Adam (Luis) Giaffoglione, Katie (Stretch) Staiert, and Cheryl Giaffoglione. Adam and Katie did a outstanding job with the teaching as Cheryl made sure everything else was in order (as usual) Adam and Katie worked on the polishing of current skills as well as advancing some to their next level. We also need to say thanks to Alana Unger (Bones) for her help filling in for Katie.
Again I was so proud of the EXCELLENT JOB that you all did while Ive been recuperating. I knew the December Classes would go well with Adam and Katie running the gym!!!

Also Congratulations to all who attended these classes, we are impressed with your commitment to keep up with your skills during the December Break.

2004-11-20 Visiting Nurse Association Exhibition
Both the Fantastic Flyers and the Acrobatic Fanatics performed for the Visiting Nurse Association Nov. 20, 2004. The Acrobatic Fanatics performed first in a super routine that they had to learn in just a sort time. We missed Stretch and Dimples due to their status on the so called Injured Reserved list. The team really appreciated their support during their recouping time. I also wanted to thanks both of them for their showing and cheering on both groups at the VNA Exhibition. Stretch and Dimples will be returning to the gym to start their new routines for their upcoming basketball half time performances starting in January. I was extremely proud of Bre, Sydney, and Michaela for their hard work and effort while in the gym. They show so much determination while in the gym working on both their stunting and tumbling skills. All their efforts showed in flying colors at the exhibition.
Angle (Twin #2), was throwing some awesome back tucks as well her favorite move the aerial. Buff displayed her version of a back tuck and series with amazing speed. Both Angle and Buff needs to be recognized for stepping up as Bases to cover for Stretch and Dimples, I know that was a difficult position to put them in, but yet they performed the stunts effortlessly!!! With Stretch and Dimples on the List I had to lean on Smiley for just about everything else, Smiley stepped-up to assist me on running and working the routine, making changes where needed, spotting, calling the set, and keeping the flow and positive attitude alive.
Then it was the Fantastic Flyers turn to perform. They were minus Bones whom was also on the List, due to a reoccurring knee injury (were wont go into that Bones). We all hope will have a speedy recovery and we will miss ya in the gymheal-up and well see ya soon. The Fantastic Flyers newly added teammates Mallory Dark, Montana Blu and JK(just kidding) we extremely impressive with their stunting as well as their tumbling skills. They too have worked so hard in the gym the past 2 months preparing their routines for this exhibition. I was so proud of their performance. Brit was also showing her stuff with a super series of back handsprings, tucks, and her gracefully thrown layout. Kassie Jo (the 4th) took to the mats throwing an excellent front series along with a lightning fast back series. Kassie Jo as well as Brit needs to be recognized for stepping up as filling in as Bases they were awesome.
Then as always Nina was so impressive displaying all her talents with an excellent modified GG 70 as well as some high-flying action of her own, she demonstrated all her front and back series as well as all her base skills flawlessly. Nina is in her 10th year with the "Fantastic Flyers".
Next was my Gina T Bug, as always being Bug she assisted me with more than I can type here. Her performance was excellent. And as usual the synchronizing tumbling skills of Nina and Bug was extremely impressive; the Double D is always a crowd pleaser.
Both exhibition groups head back to the gym to prepare for the 2005 Basketball Season.
Also a special thanks to all the parents for their support and understanding, and to Cheryl for all her assistance in helping me with all thats involved with the exhibitions.
Excellent Job to the Acrobatic Fanatics and the "Fantastic Flyers". I am so proud and blessed to have the honor of being your coach!!!
